ViewSonic G-Tablet gets its first taste of Android 3.0 Honeycomb

Hey ViewSonic G-Tablet users, some surprising new for you all: Android 3.0(.1) Honeycomb is now available for your device. One of the good things about it is that the ROM is pretty stable for such an early development, and already has the Android Market up and running.

You’d never know but, the ROM itself is actually a port of a Honeycomb ROM for the Notion Ink Adam. It’s still very much a work in progress, but we had our doubts that the tablet would ever receive Honeycomb, unofficially, or otherwise. Dubbed Bottle of Smoke, the ROM is just the beginning of the project, and hopefully we’ll have a fully functional Honeycomb ROM for both the Adam and the G-Tablet soon.

Bottle of Smoke isn’t without its issues, though, as it is still in Alpha status. The camera is still buggy and doesn’t work right now, Flash doesn’t play in the browser (OpenGL issues), and High-def movies do not play. Despite a couple of lingering bugs throughout that aren’t as serious, this ROM is very usable. You can even overclock the Tegra 2 to 1.5GHz if you so choose!

Those users may want to take a look at this ROM before who were just about to get rid of your G-Tablet. Even in Alpha status, Bottle of Smoke brings value to the tablet, which is something ViewSonic itself couldn’t even do. Or hasn’t. Either way, if you have the G-Tablet kicking around still, we suggest you give the ROM a try.

To get Bottle of Smoke up and running properly on the tablet, you’ll have to go back to the stock software the G-Tablet ships with, and flash from there.

To get started, head over to the XDA thread discussion to find installation instructions and links to download the ROM.
