Freedom of Internet - Users vs. Government

In 1984, an author named George Orwell wrote in his novel about a Dystopian Society ruled by cruel dictator and big brother who uses the out most power of surveillance to assert supreme power over every aspect of individual citizen. The big brothers and Government are trying the same to gain total power of Internet.

Internet has been most advance technology of the generation. In just matter of some years the total way of sharing information, news, access entertainment and also communication between humans have change so vividly. These have evolved in wonderful and unpredictable ways, because of its features that they are free and open nature. Now the very foundation on which its roots are fixed is being threatened by governments and private corporations from and around the world to control the change, rather to adopt to it.

The war is everywhere, even in India where on one side is the public and on other side is the very Government. The reason is control on the all powerful, Internet, which in recent times has helped the voice of common people be heard in ways that no one imagined. The main contents of complains where political dissent and dissatisfaction towards greed of corporations and even the society and government itself. Traditional media can be easily controlled and punished but contrary to that the scope and nature of Internet is a big challenge for censors and corporations.

In United States Of America bills like Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), Protect IP Act (PIPA) have used legitimate names to attempt to control on the Online Freedom. IF by any chance these bills are passed as lawas, it will impact the entire world.

India however is allowing corporations to take such measures even though the particular law doesn't exist. The people in power are making full use of this precedent as the awareness is totally lacking.

The Anti-SOPA movement has gathered millions of support even from hundreds of sites, including Google, Wikipedia, Reddit, Mozilla, etc in the form of 24-Hour Blackout.

The provisions of law had an chilling effect on the internet- any site containing unauthorized copyright material could be blocked without the legal process.  A system that could be Arbitrary censorship without repercussions.

Countries such as China Employ pervasive Internet Censorship, which heavily restricts citizens access to the internet. These measure have been decried by advocates of democracy and free speech, but many other countries now seem to be following the suit. Its being done in name of curbing piracy,Eliminating child pornography, upholding national security, Combating terrorism and organized crime, etc. all of which sound like noble cause. While measures against such things are necessary the steps proposed will also gravely undermine and impose restrictions on individuals' use of internet as we know it.
