Negatives:

  • Low colors in still pictures

Now there are many Smart phones in the market which are giving iPhone a tough Competition. And only Android phones have got this much of potential to fight with Apple iPhone in the market. But no one expected that LG will come in the list of competitors of iPhone.
LG brought G2x in the market and this is proving to be a trump card for them. This device is pulling off the sales of iPhone as well as it’s giving tough time to its Android neighbors from HTC and Samsung. We were not that behind to grab this one up. Though we didn’t managed to get it into our gadget lot but we got enough amount of time to play with G2x and that was enough for us to tell us our experience about the phone. If you are aiming for G2x then read on. This might help you to settle all your thoughts about G2x before spending your buck.

Taking it out of the box:

A USB data cable and a Phone charger come along with the phone inside the box. A user manual of the phone is also there. You don’t get any headphones bundled with the phone. We were expecting to get at least a HDMI cable bundled with the phone as the phone is having a HDMI out port (We will discuss about this later).

Build Quality:

Phone is very good to watch. The quality of the materials used for shell of the phone is really very good. The device is 4.9 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide. You might think that it must be difficult to handle but we were absolutely comfortable after handling this device. The weight of the phone is around 142 grams.
The phone has got a huge screen of 4.3 inches, so you can enjoy all your photos and videos as well as browsing to the full extent.

In the front there are also four touch buttons below the screen which help you to browse through the phone.
On the top there’s a 3.5 mm audio jack, so you can insert your favorite headphones and enjoy the music. There’s also a HDMI port in the centre at the top of the phone. With the help of this port you can connect your HDTV’s with the Phone and watch your content on the big screen. There’s also a Power key present on the top of the phone.

On the right side of the phone there’s a volume rocker and with the help of that you can control the volume while calling, playing music and videos.

On the left side of the phone you won’t get any kind of buttons. On the bottom of the phone a microUSB port is present for data transfers as well as for charging your phone. There are also two speakers each on the each side of the microUSB port.

The backside showcases the 8.0 megapixel camera of the phone. Just below the camera there’s also a LED Flash. The Silver strip which comes from the top to the down is the centre of attraction and gives the phone very nice effect.

The thing which missed out in the body was a dedicated camera button. Bad news for the ones who like to click pics with their Smartphone usually
So in terms of build we would give this device 4.6 out of 5.0

Features and Performance:

Display – G2x has got IPS Display which is even better than the AMOLED. The touch was very responsive and it didn’t hesitated even once. It brings a rich experience while watching movies and playing games. We were really impressed by the touch. The Four browsing buttons below the display also don’t disappoint either. They showed what they got by giving quick responses. We wanted to play with the touch for more time but we didn’t have that much of time as it came for a shorter period in our lot.
The Accelerometer sensor is present which auto-rotates the UI of the phone. Proximity sensor is there for auto turn off of the phone and gyro sensor is also present.
Sound – Sound quality of the phone is good. We got decent music output from the phone.
The call clarity of the phone is pretty good. We noticed a bit of dip in the voice when we were on the call. But rather than that we didn’t faced any sorts of problems.  No headphone was bundled with the phone. So for testing the sound on the earphone we used “Philips SHH 7810” earphone. We got good sound quality on the headphones and overall we were satisfied after we got what we expected.

Process – Phone’s processing is absolutely flawless. After all it’s loaded with a dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor of 1 Ghz. It has also got ULP Geforce GPU.  It has also got 512 MB of RAM. We didn’t notice any kind of hiccups while performing any kind of task or while using any kind of app. The best part was playing games on the phone. We played NFS Shift on the phone and we didn’t face any sorts of lags while playing the game. We also played HD videos on the Device. Jumping from the first minute to the fifth minute didn’t take even a single second. So now you can figure out yourself how well the phone is performing.

Android – The User Interface of the phone is pretty good. The phone comes with Android 2.2. But creators of the Cyanogen Mod tried the latest version of their Mod i.e. Cyanogen Mod 7.0 which was based on the Android 2.3.3 and it worked out pretty well. So if you want to update your phone to the Android 2.3.3 you can do it without any kinds of hesitation but still we’d recommend you to backup all your files before updating your phone.

Camera – G2x has got a primary camera of 8.0 Megapixel. The camera allows you to take still pictures at 3264 x 2448 (This is the maximum resolution of the still pictures. You can also take pictures at resolution lower than this).  The quality of the still pictures was good but still we were expecting a bit more colorful photos than what we got.
The camera also allows you to record FULL HD (1080p) Videos at 24 frames per second and HD (720p) Videos at 30 frames per second. We don’t have any sort of complaints with the video recording of the phone. The video generated after recording at FULL HD and HD modes were good.
The absence of dedicated camera button makes you to tap the screen, when you want to click a pic or you want to record a video.
It has also got a secondary camera of 1.3 MP. So this phone is all set for Video Calls.

Storage – Storage isn’t a problem in the G2x. Phone has got 8 GB of internal storage and you can expand it up to 32 GB via microSD card. For inserting the microSD card you need to open up yor phone from the back. We’d recommend you to buy a 32 GB card as you would like to carry some videos, music and apps as well as you need some space for keeping your recorded videos in the phone. HD videos will definitely take more amount of space in the phone.

Battery – G2x has got a Standard Lithium Ion battery of 1500mAh. We didn’t have that much amount of time to test the battery of the phone but a reader of our blog who purchased this phone told us that its lasts long for four and a half days on an average. At that time he used to make calls, listen music, watch a few videos, and click some pictures and most of time used to browse the internet.
According to the creators of the phone the stand-by time of the phone is of 400 hours and you talk for 7 hours and 40 minutes with it.
Talking about other features of the phone – Phone has got v2.1 Bluetooth with A2DP. It has got Wi-Fi support (802.11 b/g/n). If you talk about the 3G connectivity it has got HSDPA which can speed up to 21 MB per Second. The HDMI out allows you watch all your videos and pictures on your HDTV. We didn’t face any sort of difficulties while doing this. You will have to buy a HDMI cable from the market as it isn’t bundled with the phone.
Phone has got Stereo FM with RDS and A-GPS support for navigating around the streets.

For Features we will give this phone 4.5/5.0 and for Performance we will give this 4.8/5.0

Price – In US you can get this phone from T-Mobile for $199.99 on two year contract. The unlocked version of the will cost you $459. In India you will get the unlocked phone for Rs. 28,000.
At this price this is a must buy.
For its Price Tag we will give this 4.5/5.0

Overall we’d say the phone is really good and is all set to compete with iPhone. There are few setbacks in the phone like the absence of the dedicated camera button but that doesn’t takes it far behind in the race. Well if judge on the basis of performance it is definitely standing ahead of the iPhone 4. The Price of the phone also makes it more competitive to iPhone. In India iPhone 4 is priced at Rs. 34,000 or so(Prices vary for different carriers). Well if you take our opinion we will definitely tell you to go for this one. But it completely depends on you what kind of phone and OS you like.
