Copying a few documents from your hard drive to your flash drive doesn’t stress out the default windows copier too much. But if you’re dumping gigabytes of data from one drive to another, however, you’ll quickly find that the default copier is sluggish and unreliable. Moreover, even the basic functionality of pausing/resuming file transfers are missing.
TeraCopy and
Microsoft RichCopy are two freeware that will boost your file copying capability while providing many advanced features.
TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, providing the user with a lot of features:
- Copy files faster : TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.
- Pause and resume file transfers : Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
- Error recovery : In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skip the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
- Interactive file list : TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.
- Shell integration : TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.
RichCopy has been around since 2001 but was only recently released to the public; prior to that it had been an internal Microsoft tool. The level of control offered is too much for the average user. But power users will find a great tool for speeding up transfers and re-initiating them from the last file copied in case the connection is broken. The options for customizations are huge and power users will surely love it. The granular control offered covers everything from filtering files and directories by attributes, error handling options, attribute changing, copy operation scheduling and changing timestamp to setting the number of threads and cache size to be used.
All in all, both Teracopy and Richcopy are excellent substitutes to the default windows file copier. While an average user will prefer Teracopy for use, Richcopy will be the unanimous choice for power users.
